Mossel Bay, South Africa.

The PetroSA Marathon has received a timely boost from the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) and Association for International Marathon Standards (AIMS) which have accredited the race route.

The IAAF and AIMS accreditation means athletes can use the 12th edition of the PetroSA Marathon, which is scheduled for 27 September 2014 in Mossel Bay, to qualifying for other international race meetings.

“Athletes participating in the PetroSA Marathon can now automatically qualify to participate in any international road running event in Africa or internationally. Athletes can even use it to qualify for such events as the Commonwealth or the Olympic Games,” said Ms Nosizwe Nokwe-Macamo, the PetroSA Group CEO.

“Our vision for the PetroSA Marathon, has always been to ensure we build it into a popular, can’t miss race meeting for athletes from across South Africa and beyond. The IAAF and IAMS accreditation are a step in that direction,” she added.

The PetroSA Marathon is also on the calendar of Athletics South Africa’s yearly race meetings. Race organisers have indicated that some of the early entrants for the 2014 race originate from countries that include Kenya, Tanzania, Eritrea, Ethiopia and Lesotho.

The marathon race boasts a total of R500 000 in cash prizes. The cash prize for the winner men’s and women’s 42.2km race is R60 000. There are also cash prizes for the first ten (10) men and women athletes in the 42.2km race.
Last year’s men’s and women’s 42.2km races were respectively won by Motsiebe Molefi (2:18.24) of Lesotho and Irene Loritareng (2:43.57) of Kenya.

“The race meeting has over the years proven to be one of the most important dates in the Southern Cape’s social calendar.  PetroSA’s sponsorship of the event allows the National Oil Company an opportunity to strengthen relationships with stakeholders in the Mossel Bay area,” said Ms Nokwe-Macamo.

Entry forms for the PetroSA Marathon are available on or on . The race is scheduled to start at 07h00 from Mossel Bay’s picturesque Santos Beach. It will feature a 42.2km, 21.1km, 10km races and a 5km fun run.
